Electromechanical components

Apparent opposites: conducting or shielding

Relays

Relays are mechanical components which, next to connectors, have to be made of materials of the highest standard. Their moving parts must maintain

  • high ampacity and
  • good spring properties
  • throughout their working life.

To meet these standards the materials must have little relaxation, high electrical conductivity and strength as well as good forming properties, such as K88.

Shieldings

Electromagnetic radiation can adversely affect the information processing in electronic components. Miniaturized components in particular need to be protected against

  • radiation from external sources
  • radiation from each other and also
  • emitting of radiation

This is achieved by shields (see photo on the top right and bottom left) based on the principle of the Faraday cage.

Nickel silver alloys such as N18 are particularly suitable due to their good soldering properties and corrosion resistance and are used in thicknesses ranging between 0.1 and 0.4 mm.
