Wieland breaks ground on recycling and refining center in Shelbyville, KY

  • Groundbreaking on a new $100 million copper and copper alloy recycling facility.
  • Creation of up to 75 quality jobs for local residents, with more planned for the future.
  • Recycling center pays tribute to Wieland's commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality.

Wieland broke ground for a new recycling facility in Shelbyville, Kentucky, on June 29, 2022. The Governor and other elected officials, partners of the projects, neighboring businesses, as well as area schools and employees participated in the event. The facility was announced in May 2021 and is located on 79 acres off McConnell Way in Shelby County.

The ceremony acknowledges Wieland’s growing presence in Kentucky – the North American headquarters are in Louisville and the recycling center will be its first manufacturing facility in the state. The endeavor will introduce up to 75 new jobs into the local community. The plant will melt and recycle copper and copper alloy scrap for use in manufacturing semi-finished products for customers throughout North America.

“Last year, we welcomed Wieland announcement of a new headquarters to the Commonwealth as well as the company’s first production facility in our state,” Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said. “Today, I am thrilled to join Wieland and local leaders to break ground on an incredible opportunity that will further Kentucky’s economic momentum and provide quality jobs to our residents. This investment is another important piece in Kentucky’s unprecedented economic growth, and I can’t wait to see the success Wieland has here in the Commonwealth.”

Wieland delivers on its commitment to sustainability, recycling leadership and advancement toward a circular economy and carbon neutrality with the $100 million investment. The facility in Shelbyville, Kentucky, will leverage the latest and most efficient technology. By investing in a recycling center in Shelbyville and acquiring the US recycling specialist Totall Metal Recycling in Granite City, Illinois, in April 2022, Wieland is expanding its market leadership in the US.

“Wieland is excited to grow its footprint in the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” stated Matt Bedingfield, President of Wieland North America Recycling and Senior Vice President of Global Metal Supply. “The incredible support from Governor Beshear, as well as county and local leaders, has been instrumental in our progress to this point. We very much look forward to becoming a part of the Shelbyville community and strengthening our presence in the state.”
