Wieland Group publishes its first Sustainability Report

The Wieland Group published its first Sustainability Report on August 10, 2021. The report includes extensive non-financial information on the company’s business activities and underscores Wieland’s commitment towards its ambitious environment, social and governance (ESG) goals.

“Sustainability has always been a top priority throughout Wieland’s 200 year-old company history and is a core component of our corporate strategy. Today, we are in the midst of a transformation process that affects the entire economy and demands everyone’s contribution,” explains Dr. Erwin Mayr, CEO of the Wieland Group.

“We want to live up to our aspiration as an industry pioneer, which is why we set ourselves ambitious sustainability targets last year. The publication of our first sustainability report marks an important milestone on our path towards a more sustainable future,” he continues.

Clearly defined targets for the period through 2030
In its first sustainability report, the Wieland Group describes the sustainability targets the company has set for itself for the period leading up to 2030 in detail. These include: a 90 % share of recycled raw materials in product manufacturing, a 42 % reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) compared to the 2018/19 fiscal year, and a 12 % reduction in Scope 3 emissions over the same period. In the long term, Wieland is committed to achieving “net zero” by 2045 at the latest in accordance with the Paris Agreement. The climate targets were developed in line with the requirements of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and are currently in the process of being reviewed.

A total of six strategic sustainability focus fields have been defined: 1) decarbonization, 2) circular economy, 3) eco-friendly extension of product portfolio, 4) health and safety, 5) diversity and inclusion, and 6) responsibility in the supply chain.

New sustainability department*
In order to support the implementation of its ambitious sustainability agenda, the Wieland Group has made a number of organizational changes. A newly created Sustainability department has been responsible for steering global sustainability management since 2020. It is part of the global "Research, Development & Innovation" organization, as technical innovation will play a central role in the sustainable transformation of the Wieland Group.

International reporting standards
The Sustainability Report complies with the widely used reporting standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Going forward, the Wieland Group will report transparent information on sustainability progress and developments on an annual basis.
